J&H Char Siew

My friend recommended me this char siew delivery when i told her i will be eating at home last weekend. I called them to arrange this order, i ordered 4 strips of char siew, RM25 each, boy is it expensive!!! as i got some friends over to makan. The order-taker asked if i wanna have the strips cut or not, i said leave it, i wanna cut it to my own size. he also asked if i wan those black burnt stuff trimmed off, i said no as my wife digs that stuff, unhealthy but a little is okay.

so, on saturday evening, the delivery came, i paid them, it came in aluminium tin foil, it is still warm, no actually it is hot as i can see it steaming. i roll open the foil and the most aromatic smell filled my house i kid you not. goddamn, i made the right decision of not getting them to cut the strips. as you can see from the picture, i already whacked more than 3/4 of a strip before taking the picture.

in the tin foil, they included some cucumber slices, which is thoughtful of them since cucumber sorta like cools and negate all the bad stuff from eating the black burnt sides. anyway, the burnt sides is quite acceptable, just the right amount. the char siew itself can be called the 8th wonder of the world. it is slightly sticky/crispy on the outside, and soft and tender in the inside. i can see that there are three layer pork they used. this plate of 4 strips was finished by the 4 of us within minutes. all of them got the contact from me, so i am sharing it over here.

anyway, they also gave us some char siew sauce to go with the rice. it is not those outside thick and sweet crap we always take but this is really something different, i think it is lard and the secret recipe sauce that makes it good with rice. all of us had 2 bowls of rice each.

writing this makes me look forward for this coming weekend, as i just ordered another 4 strips. this time it is for the beer session. ohhhh, i will give up 5 years of my life for this.

Oh, i forgotten to mention, they are 100% homemade and not mass-produce so sometimes they cannot keep up with the orders.

How to order: Call/text/whatsapp 012-3898710 for pre-order (Monday to Friday).

Delivery: All delivery will be done only on Saturday and Sunday as arranged. Only Selangor delivery.

Price: RM25 per strip. Yes, it is premium priced but the fact that no artificial coloring or msg additives used makes it worth it. Try it once, you will never eat other char siew ever....

(Off-Topic) What NOT To Name Your Restaurant

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 — A marketing gimmick to lure customers to the AK-47 Nasi Kandar Restaurant was shot down by City Hall after the owners were issued a compound.
The nasi kandar shop, located in Jalan Sultan Ismail, bears the signboard of two Kalashnikovs and another picture of a uniformed man holding the assault rifle.

Claypot Chicken Rice @ Paramount Petaling Jaya, Restoran Sorn

What is it: Claypot Chicken Rice. Use original claypots, not those plastic types.

Why so delisyious: The moment you open the claypot cover, the smell is enough to make you crazy. they are generous with the seasoning and sauce so that the rice does not turn white. the chicken is nicely done too, not too over cooked, just nice and tender.

Specialty: The burnt rice (fan jiu). Is quite easy to scrape it off the pot for the grand finale. Another specialty is that the old uncle who personally cook this claypot rice is forever sucking on a cigarette. Try not to be too picky on your order or you might kena fark.

Restoran Hua Xing @ Wisma LBS, Sungai Way

Hua Xing is one of the places that has all the hallmarks of a great hole-in-the-wall restaurant. It's located on the first floor of unassuming Wisma LBS, which is accessible from a small road from Sungai Way market or from a small slip road right after the Sunway Motorola bridge. If you're planning to dine here, be sure to call up in advance to reserve a table. The place usually fills up quickly with large groups from 6.30pm.

Dumpling Rice @ Ho Kee Restaurant - Lorong 27 Geylang

I always pass by this restaurant and seeing them hanging a lot of dumplings at the kitchen area.  So i thought of trying it . To my surprise these dumpling actually taste good. It only cost 3 SGD , as the portion of the dumpling is decent .  One is enough to fill you up for night supper mood.

Eminent Frog Porridge @ Lorong 19 Geylang, Singapore

Good day!  It was a fruitful trip day hunting for good bargains for jogging shoes in peninsular, and some camera add-ons . So during dinner me and my friends were really hungry and decided to go eminent frog porridge to check out what is the hype is all about.

Eminent is quite popular among the locals for frog porridge. As for myself I don't really fancy frog porridge, I have also tasted a fairbit of other frog porridges in Geylang area but non strike a chord in me.  So anyway head down to  lorong 19 at Geylang . Nearest mrt will be Aljunied or kallang mrt station. For tourist I think is better to get a cab because most cab drivers will know this place, finding this place can be a 30 min- treasure hunt saga. You can actually see tons of signage  bearing their restaurant's name upon reaching.

Champagne Chicken @ New Paris Restaurant SS@

Of course, this restaurant offers more than this Champagne Chicken but since I only got to snap this picture, what the heck.

This restaurant, dulu-dulu, is a very ap tap restaurant. The floor is not cement but all thin planks. They are noticeable by the way they wrap many layers of plastic sheets at the table so that everytime the customer finish their dinner, all they have to do is to tahpow the table and the next customer can sit and order immediately. this practice speeds the 'table clearing process'.

Wantan Mee @ Restoran New Green Hill

So when it comes to wantan mee, everybody got their favourite stall, their fav spec, their fav style.

This stall is not my favourite but since i tahpow from this uncle ting last weekend, then i might as well blog it up.

Choi Yuen Lo Mai Kai @ Sungkai, Perak

Sungkai is a small town about 1.5 hours drive from Kuala Lumpur and is a good stop if you intend to visit the famous Felda Sungai Klah Hot Springs or make a trip up to Ipoh. I've been to the hot springs twice so far, and I must say that it's quite clean and well maintained. They have many different pools, some in the public area where you can boil eggs and the private enclosures that fit up to 10 people

Anyway, after a nice dip at Sungai Klah, we'd usually head to Sungkai town, which is several rows of old buildings, some dating back to pre-World War 2. Our 'target' is to sample Choi Yuen's famous lo mai kai (glutinous rice dumpling), baos (dumplings) and some good old simple home styled Chinese dishes. It's easy to miss, as it's quite hidden, but look out for a small fish market / fish tackle shop - it's just opposite. Like most parts of Ipoh, they speak Cantonese here, so it's quite easy to order your food from the white boards on the wall.

The star here is the lo mai kai. It's steamed just right, and it's made up of chewy rice, pork slices and mushrooms. It's not too salty or mushy either, which is a sign of repeated steaming. They can even sell frozen lo mai kai for you to bring home and steam it. We'd usually get about 6-7 of these to satisfy our cravings when we're back in KL. I don't have any pictures (my last visit there was in 2011), but I'd recommend you to look out for this gem of a find. The people who run the business, especially the cook is really getting on with age, so I doubt that their children would want to continue this, so time is short, go for a food discovery trip !

Double Cooked Pork @ Osaka Ohsho, Raffles City

Have you heard of double cooked pork ?

Apparently, it translates into "wui wo yook" in Cantonese, which is "The process of cooking twice cooked pork involves first simmering pork belly steaks in water with spices, e.g. slices of ginger, cloves, star anise, jujubes and salt. After refrigeration to firm the meat, next it is then cut into thin slices. The pork is then returned to a wok and shallow fried in oil, usually along with some vegetables. The most common vegetables to accompany the pork are: napa cabbage, bell peppers or scallions." Read more about it here

Great Thai Food in One Location @ The Little Kitchen, Bangkok

Greetings from Bangkok! This joint is usually our first stop when we are in Bangkok, not only because it is close to where we stay but it also does serve good authentic Thai dishes.

The Little Kitchen in Central Chidlom: Most of the time we will say, hey its in a shopping mall, locals don't dine there... but this place I can say patronized by mostly locals. That is a testament to its authenticity and it being in a shopping mall says quality and convenience.

The variety of dishes are pretty wide, from salads to noodles, rice meals to individual dishes and many kinds of Thai desserts.

Pork Noodles @ Teck Kee Cooked Food, Kebun Baru Food Centre

Pork Noodles. There's so many variations, pork ball noodles, minced pork noodles, pork cube noodles, dry version, soupy versions... pork is such a versatile meat. I made my way to the Jalan Kebun Market and Food Centre near Bishan / Toa Payoh one fine Saturday morning and queued up for 5 minutes behind sad looking aunties and furious smartphone-keyboard-pounding youngsters for my pork noodles fix.

I ordered their standard bowl (actually there isn't much choice, its either pork noodles or pork noodles). The noodles are served in a nice traditional 'Cockerel' bowl and I can tell you that food magically taste better !

(Home Cooking) Steamed Salty Minced Pork

This is another power partner for rice. Basically it is minced pork left to steam with some mui choi or what they call it preserved vege. this dish is salty as hell and the sauce left as a result of the steaming process is absolutely delicious. please notice in the pic, hardly any sauce left because everyone takes
it. left about 2 tablespoon for me. i need to come back home earlier.

where to get it: ask ur mother
price: priceless

(Home Cooking) Braised Chicken Feet Stew with Groundnuts

This dish i dun think i ever seen anybody serving it. Maybe too disgusting looking. Main ingredients are chicken feet slow-cooked with ginger, star anise, that black thing when you bite your whole mouth got smell when you eat indian curry, ground nuts. The black sauce I dunno made out of what ler.

Anyway, the sauce is fantastic to go with rice, i just whacked two bowls. the chicken feet and nuts make wonderful mouth exercise. Yau hau kam. I really think this dish is best when left overnight. Kasi sauce perap itu kaki ayam sket.

where to get: ask ur mother

Tsuru-koshi Udon @ IMM Mall

I first discovered Tsuru-koshi udon in the basement food court area at Takashimaya. I'm not really a fan of udon, I personally prefer ramen or soba, but my friends promised that I would enjoy this.

The first Tsuru-koshi udon i had was their spicy tan-tan special ($9), which you have either hot or cold. Basically its a basic udon bowl that is accompanied with spicy minced pork and a perfect poached egg with a runny yolk (i'm hungry thinking about it now!). You're supposed to mix the egg together with the udon, so as to make it taste smoother. The chopped scallions further add flavor to this simple dish.

Shabusen @ Ginza Core

I visited Tokyo for the first time last year in September 2012. Someone told me that it's impossible to find bad food in Tokyo, and it's a city with the most Michelin star rated restaurants in the world. I have to agree with that statement, it really is a foodie's paradise. I can't think of any unpleasant food. Heck, even the food in the convenience stores tastes good ! They have everything from salads, sushi, onigiri, rice to strange hot dog buns with spaghetti in the middle!

Ok, so I stayed at Shinagawa Prince, which was an excellent location with many, many good eateries around it. Right opposite the road was the Shinagawa train station, which is a large train hub, serving many areas around Tokyo all the way to the outer parts via Shinkansen (Bullet Trains). The famed Ginza area is just around 3-4 kilometers down the main road.

Grilled Fish @ BBQ Grilled Fish Clementi

I think Singapore has a lot of nice, healthy food. In fact, most hawker centres have calorie ratings and messages that reminds you that your nasi lemak, bah kut teh and such are very fattening !

But you know, we should indulge once in a while (or if you like - 'Live Dangerously') and just go all out and find the most sinful food you can think of. I don't know how my wife does it, but with the amount of indulgent food that she eats, she doesn't put on weight easily. I would say the same of myself 10 years back, but hey, I'm no spring chicken anymore. What goes in, reflects instantaneously in my big tummy. Some people (like my wife) gets all the fun. :(

Steamed Pork Pate @ JEM

Now once in a blue moon, we just yearn for simple comfort food, maybe its food that our mothers cooked at home or food that was absolutely no frills, yet satisfying. I love to eat steamed pork with either salted fish or mui choy. One weekend we were at JEM - the latest shopping mall in the West for groceries, and my wife mentioned that a stall in the Koufu food court had very good steamed pork. She's previously tried the food earlier in the week at Toa Payoh.

I ordered the 'Steamed Pork Pate with Mui Choy' ($5.50) set and brown rice (+$0.60) and a watered down soup. Besides pork, they had steamed egg, chicken and the like. All the dishes were steamed in bamboo containers in front of you and its guaranteed to be piping hot. The rice wasn't that unpleasant to eat, and its very filling.

KL Hokkien Noodles @ Kong Kee, Geylang

Thanks to the Internet, it's not too difficult to look for comfort food whenever we miss food from KL. One rainy evening, we decided to hunt for the famed KL styled Hokkien Mee (Noodles) in Geylang. It was a good 20 minute drive from our place in Clementi to Geylang and we were guided by our 'as you like it' GPS system. I call it the 'as you like it' GPS because sometimes it just goes crazy and leads us to strange roads. Anyway... when we arrived at the restaurant, the rain had already stopped. The place had air conditioning, not really the best of environments to enjoy smoky and heavy 'smelly' KL Hokkien mee.

The walls had numerous newspaper cuttings, reviews from famous local celebrities and chinese characters that introduced their star dishes (which strangely included Bah Kut Teh). We ordered a KL Hokkien Beehoon Mee, Cantonese Yin Yang (kuey teow and crispy beehoon) and a recommended Crispy Fried Fish Bones.

Restaurant Goon Wah @ Jalan Kuchai Lama

Goon Wah Restaurant, so far this is a very unique restaurant to me. They only open on weekdays lunch time. and they are close on weekends. So its not easy to eat the food as i was staying far away. The only time i can eat is having some appointment around there.

This restaurant is hidden behind a shell station along Jalan Kuchai Lama, its at a row of show mostly mechanic. This shop located next to a undertaker shop (maybe this bring luck). Its usually SUPER pack around 12pm to 2pm

Unique Seafood @ Section 14 PJ

It been a year since i came to this restaurant. Last week some of my Korean and Singapore friend was here so  i brought them to try Malaysian Style Seafood.

Since my last visit they have added many more type of live seafood, many type of lobster, many types of crabs ( the king crab look scary, like a big spider), geoduck, plenty species of fish and many more
