Now once in a blue moon, we just yearn for simple comfort food, maybe its food that our mothers cooked at home or food that was absolutely no frills, yet satisfying. I love to eat steamed pork with either salted fish or mui choy. One weekend we were at JEM - the latest shopping mall in the West for groceries, and my wife mentioned that a stall in the Koufu food court had very good steamed pork. She's previously tried the food earlier in the week at Toa Payoh.
I ordered the 'Steamed Pork Pate with Mui Choy' ($5.50) set and brown rice (+$0.60) and a watered down soup. Besides pork, they had steamed egg, chicken and the like. All the dishes were steamed in bamboo containers in front of you and its guaranteed to be piping hot. The rice wasn't that unpleasant to eat, and its very filling.
The pork pate was steamed just right - not too hard or too soft and the other ingredients like mui choy or salted fish never over shadows it. It is well complemented by good soy sauce which mixes superbly with the pork juices and it goes very well with rice. Top each mouthful with some bird's eye chilli (cili padi) and you'll have a satisfying meal. I've eaten here 4 times now, and I must say that they have a good consistent taste. It gets a good 5 out of 5 from me. Highly recommended !
Long Live Steamed Pork Pate !
