KL Hokkien Noodles @ Kong Kee, Geylang

Thanks to the Internet, it's not too difficult to look for comfort food whenever we miss food from KL. One rainy evening, we decided to hunt for the famed KL styled Hokkien Mee (Noodles) in Geylang. It was a good 20 minute drive from our place in Clementi to Geylang and we were guided by our 'as you like it' GPS system. I call it the 'as you like it' GPS because sometimes it just goes crazy and leads us to strange roads. Anyway... when we arrived at the restaurant, the rain had already stopped. The place had air conditioning, not really the best of environments to enjoy smoky and heavy 'smelly' KL Hokkien mee.

The walls had numerous newspaper cuttings, reviews from famous local celebrities and chinese characters that introduced their star dishes (which strangely included Bah Kut Teh). We ordered a KL Hokkien Beehoon Mee, Cantonese Yin Yang (kuey teow and crispy beehoon) and a recommended Crispy Fried Fish Bones.

Our dishes arrived 10 minutes later, and we tucked in.

1) Hokkien Mee : They claimed that they only used sauces and noodles sourced from KL to maintain the authencity. Well, I'd give it a 3.5 out of 5, it had a good wok hei, but still cannot compare to the smoky taste from KL styled charcoal stove cooking.

2) Crispy Fried Fish Bones : This was a surprise, basically its large fish bones with slivers of meat which are then dipped in light batter and fried together with bird's eye chilli (cili padi) and garlic. It would make a very nice dish to accompany beers. This gets a 4 out of 5 in my book. Best consumed when it's piping hot, otherwise the fishy smell creeps in once it cools.

3) Cantonese Yin Yang : This dish arrived last - crispy fried bee hoon with oil fried kuey teow in the middle. There's plenty of ingredients, calamari, vegetables and pork slices. The sauce however, didn't have enough taste of egg in it, so this gets a 2.5, basically the ingredients over shadowed everything.

In summary, this is a restaurant worth visiting, especially if you get hungry at night and don't mind a little night adventure to Geylang.
