I first discovered Tsuru-koshi udon in the basement food court area at Takashimaya. I'm not really a fan of udon, I personally prefer ramen or soba, but my friends promised that I would enjoy this.
The first Tsuru-koshi udon i had was their spicy tan-tan special ($9), which you have either hot or cold. Basically its a basic udon bowl that is accompanied with spicy minced pork and a perfect poached egg with a runny yolk (i'm hungry thinking about it now!). You're supposed to mix the egg together with the udon, so as to make it taste smoother. The chopped scallions further add flavor to this simple dish.
The udon is very springy and gives a good bite, much better than normal udon which tends to be softer. This is a good sign that it's freshly made.
They have about 10 varieties of udon and some simple rice bowls. Recently, they've introduced udon/don bowls which is perfect for big eaters like me or for customers who'd like to share their meals. The sets start from $12 to $15, and you can either have a bigger don or udon portion. I personally enjoy the tempura prawn udon and kaarage don combo ($14.90). Remember to ask for a small saucer with wasabi from the kitchen, as its not available on the tables. As you can see, this is a hearty meal and should satisfy you enough to cancel your after lunch meetings!
The soup is simple, clear and slightly salty, and the springy udon goes well with it. Remember to slurp it loudly to get both soup and udon into your mouth ath the same time! The tempura prawn is fresand piping hot, so it also tastes very good. Eat this with the wasabi soy sauce dip. If you like a little more flavor, there's a sesame seed grinder and chilli powder on every table.
Ok, moving on to the kaarage rice. Its freshly made as well, with prawns and some vegetables lightly oil fried till its golden. They serve it with good quality japanese rice which are cooked just right; like th udon, they have a nice bite. Wash it all down with a nice green tea and it's a well-rounded meal.
